Water-Energy-Food Security in the Context of Mining

Water, energy and food (WEF) security constitute critical components of human well-being and include aspects of supply, demand and access to these three necessary components of well-being.

Water, energy and food (WEF) security constitute critical components of human well-being and include aspects of supply, demand and access to these three necessary components.

IISD has developed a WEF framework for agricultural watersheds and proposed adapting it for mining, watersheds and other contexts.

As part of this project, IISD explored the implementation of this framework in Suriname, and used inputs and workshops to develop the WEFsat-Mining tool to assess WEF security, explore the related implications of mining development and, finally, provide insights for decisions to consider the social, economic and environmental drivers of these interlinked securities.
